The Death of Jane Lawrence - Caitlin Starling

up to Chap 22 - and it's a fairly episodic gothic ghost story so far. Here's the story so far. Jane marries Dr Augustine Lawrence, as a business arrangement.  She needs a husband, and he needs an accountant, kind of.  he really doesn't, but it's either a McGuffin, or he's setting her up. She is to live at his surgery, but spooky night, and broken carriage, and she's stuck at his residence.  She snoops a bit, (and she's told not to go into the locked cellar, as it's not structurally safe) and gradually finds info about Elodie, who he sends a regular cheque to her parents, but it's never cashed.  He says was a patient of his who died. Then a bunch of his doctor friends turn up unannounced to play a "game", and they reveal Elodie was his wife, who died.  They want to use the Cellar, but he gets cranky, and storms out, and they use the library.  Jane is part of an initiation, and via some drink maybe, she hallucinates that Augustine killed Elo...

Scorpion - Christian Cantrell

One third through, and it's just getting ok now. So far it's been a bit slow We have a serial killer, Raveer, and we know exactly who that is, because he has his own chapters.  he's been killing people on a list, and in order of age.  And then stamps serial numbers on them, which is revealed to be a PIN for access to a bank of sorts.  Very clever for the sake of being clever We have a data analyst, Quinn, who, using data science, manages to figure out who the killer is, and organises a meeting with him. We have another brilliant female, Henrietta, who seems to be there for support for Quinn, and possible comic relief.  I'm still not exactly sure why her character exists. And we have the boss, Moretti. At the two thirds mark, we finally have the meeting, with Reveer and Quinn, where it's revealed that the hit list is from the "Epoch identity" which is a code that no one can crack, except for Reveer.  but it turns out it's not from him, but is from the f...
